LAUTECH, This is robbery

with 58 comments

I was asking about a course from a friend and he mentioned Ladoke Akintola University. Being the net nerd, I googled LAUTECH. First link to their official website, good thing.

 lautech

First, the Academics link goes no where. Shame.

Second, they have a link to Open Courseware. Suspicious. Sounds like the Open Courseware offering from MIT. And yes, it was. Or rather, it is.

  1. THERE IS NO ROBBERY FROM LAUTECH….Demola stop dissin my school…The website probably had some problems…I have in the past downloaded materials from the OpenCourseWare..It actually has links to MIT and some other schools in China(yes)..

I guess it was a server problem….not being immodest, I make bold to say that it’s one of the best school sites, having over 4000 pages as at 2007 and completely developed by the students…

  2. Tolu, I have no problem with them using contents from MIT’s Open CourseWare, but they would have given a visible credit link to Open CourseWare.

  6. Guys, Thank God for Lautech. I went through the content of your discussion and I am glad to tell you that Lautech is one of the best schools you can ever attend in Nigeria. Ladokites are doing Great in the midst of the very tough competition.I mean excelling in all fields out here. So, just get focused with your studies, graduate with a good grade and your limit would be beyond the skies.I have seen this practically. I graduated in 2006 and I am currently an oil well completions engineer with a multinational oil servicing firm in nigeria. I have been moved to the UK as for now by the company. I wouldnt be able to tell where I would be in the near future.Like I said earlier ,i met some Ladokite doing really fine in the company b4 I got there and I have a colleague of mine moving alongside with me.Its all about HARDWORK,FOCUS AND PRAYER.BEST OF LUCK.I see more of u guys joining the league.

  7. @Saheed, I have no problem with LAUTECH web developer using the content MIT OpenCourseware, actually, I praise them for it. But they could have placed visible return links and done a better job of fine tuning. Spring lectures in Nigeria?

  8. Oladipo, sorry to say this whats your problem with the website thing?if they failed to put the link(s) that shouldn’t raise anybody’s eyebrow at least,it benefits we all.
we should not always see errors but being optimistic enough, always see the positive side of all things.
saheed, thumbs up 2 you;and all out gone, present and incoming ladokites.
just keep developing yourselves.we’ll meet at the top.

  9. Despite what people think, I have no problem with LAUTECH developers using the content. MIT OpenCourseWare uses a Creative Commons license, which means that if you use the content (which is free) you are usually required to link back to the origin of the content.

But here, LAUTECH’s language is implying that it owns the content (even though, it does state that the content was taken from MIT OpenCourseWare and other sources)

  11. @jummy, i have no problem with the school. and no, i never applied to LAUTECH, i have some friends from there whom I respect a lot. They are quite good, but the developers should give appropriate credits.

  12. Who is this guy? moreover, what is your problem? Try to forget about the open courseware issue. You’re downgrading all ladokites and I dont like it. If you cant get the course you’re looking for on lautech open courseware, then check another website. Lautech is the best university and I’m proud to be a 400L of the department of management science at that great citadel of learning

  18. @Ibikunle, my name is Oladipo Ademola (obviously) and my description is shown beside my picture above. To view more about me, you can visit my linkedin profile (the button below my picture in the top right).

I attended Yabatech and like I said earlier, LAUTECH’s website is far better than YABATECH’s site. But you all should remember that the website is seen worldwide, therefore there are rules to follow. If you use content covered by Creative Commons license, you are usually expected to provide a visible reference to the source of the contents. Or can’t the web developers in LAUTECH include a reference link. How difficult can that be?

And yes, I do design websites. It is my job. Visit my company’s website to view some of the work I have done. http://www.ibsnigeria.com

After much inquire frm LAUTECH i got the information that LAUTECH has a legal agreement with MIT on the use of this courseware. They have a local server that house the entire courseware within the campus .So what is your our cry.If you dnt a job better go and look for one.I also have the information that LAUTECH is launching a new website soon. You can also checkout their portal http://www.lautechportal.net .I am proud to be the product of that great school.i hail all LADOKITE

  43. LAUTECH OpenCourseWare is an initiative of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology to put all of the educational materials from Ladoke akintola University of Technology(LAUTECH), Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT, Utah State University and every other Institutions and organizations participating in OpenCourseWare Consortium online. An OpenCourseWare is a free and open digital publication of high quality university-level teaching materials – including syllabi, lecture notes, assignments, and exams –organized as courses.

OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiatives typically do not provide a degree, credit or certification, or access to instructors. The materials are made available under open licenses, for use and adaptation by educators and learners around the world.OCW is a concept developed at MIT by a faculty committee that posited that the best way to advance education around the world was to share their course materials openly and freely, utilizing the World Wide Web. The OCW concept is a part of the larger open knowledge movement that promotes free and unrestricted access to knowledge. An OCW site provides open access to the primary teaching materials for courses taught at educational institutions, enabling educators to draw on the materials for teaching purposes, and students and self-learners to utilize the materials for the development of their personal knowledge in a particular subject area

We dont have to be abusive .I think what this guy need is proper orientation .Once you have a legal agreement with MIT you can make use of their couseware putting your organisation logo.A lot of Universities are into such agreement with MIT. LAUTECH and OAU in Nigeria and some other universities across africa e.g

    http://mit.nelc.edu.eg/OcwWeb/Chemical-Engineering/10-492-1Fall-2004/CourseHome/index.htm
    http://www.lautech.edu.ng/Courseware/che2/2-993JSpring-2005/OcwWeb/Mechanical-Engineering/2-993JSpring-2005/CourseHome/index.htm

That is why it is referred to as Open Cousrseware .

Well gud one frm LADOKE.I didnt know they have such feature on their website..Thank Man for the Information

  45. I really admire the nature of Lautech students and graduates alike. But note the MIT OpenCourseWare is licensed under the creative commons license.

    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/

By the terms of the CC license, any content you use must also be licensed on the CC license. Which, unless, your page refused to load completely, I do not see ANY REFERENCE TO THAT LICENSE. Refusal to re-license under the CC license is ROBBERY/THEFT/PLAGIARISM.

I truly admire their foresight by getting other content, but whatever is worth doing at all, it worth doing well. If you do a google search for “Open Course Ware”, you find a number of schools adapting MIT’s OpenCourseWare, both format and content. BUT ALL SITES EITHER LINK BACK TO OPENCOURSEWARE CONSORTIUM OR RELEASE THEIR CONTENT UNDER THE CC LICENSE BY PLACING THE CC LICENSE LOGO ON THE PAGE. Here are some links

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_OpenCourseWare
    http://ocw.usu.edu/
    http://ocw.jhsph.edu/
    http://ocw.tufts.edu/
    http://oyc.yale.edu/
    http://ocw.nd.edu/
    http://ocw.osaka-u.ac.jp/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons

And for other LADOKITES, who may wish to come rain abuses on me, open your eyes (read ALL the comments) and open your minds. I have no wish to attack Lautech or their website, but I will GLADLY criticize badly done jobs on the internet. Even my own.

But i think you must have missed your med or need to see your doc for you to have put such an incriminating and insultive topic. menh dat is too low! i think someone mentioned in one of the post that you are using that to gain a cheap popularity. i think you give a try next time, ok?. . . you dumb ass!!!

  49. Its funny, you were making sense until you showed the LAUTECH part of you. No offense, I understand how you feel, when sometimes you have to open your eyes and see the truth.

Wouldnt it make more sense to use the time spent raining abuses on me, on my blog, to contact the webmasters of the LAUTECH site and make them improve it. Such that, you can comeback here and reference the updated site so that people like (who have missed their medication or have way too much time on their hands) will not be able to claim that LAUTECH has a lousy site.

If the alumni cant talk to the webmasters (maybe because you are afraid of them), give me their numbers or email, I speak to them on your behalf, after all, its not like they can withhold my transcript or something.

What about LAUTECH: YOUR SITE IS BAD, DO SOMETHING. i think that would have earn u some respects and applause but instead u acted as if u know all calling urself “the net nerd”. It takes not only sitting on computer, tapping on the keyboard and dragging the mouse that makes u a good blogger. It takes brain too! ok? Get that in to your f.u.c.k.n head.
