A Misleading Ad – The Guy Who Got Rich Quick

with 3 comments

We’ve all seen this guy’s ads featured in income opportunity publications. He’s the guy making anywhere from $5,000 to $500,000 in a few days or weeks. He claims he got rich quick with very little effort and only a few brain cells functioning. He attributes this success to a secret plan or product he is willing to sell you for $20 to $30 bucks.

Now let’s step back for a moment and look at this guy’s ad. First of all, his ad is usually a page long. The print is micro- small so he may put as many details of his wonderful life on one page for your enjoyment and envy.
After we hunt down our glasses and settle down to read this fascinating "rags to riches" account we become boggled and googly-eyed with the details. These details usually include how broke he was and how now he and his family are buying Mercedes and BMWs every year and taking exotic vacations they only dreamed about. He usually refers himself as "a little guy" just like you. Therefore his ad is strategically written to strike a cord that adheres to those of us looking for a way out of pending financial doom or the nine-to-five grind.

The guy who got rich quick offers you the "sizzle" without even a glimpse of the steak. This type of advertising is usually called ‘a blind ad’ because we never know what the product is. All we know is that it’s a BIG SECRET plan to riches.

The intention is to ask you to buy something without knowing a thing about it. Well you know it made him rich, don’t you? No you don’t. There is no law against telling stories. There are only laws against misrepresenting products being sold. He doesn’t say anything about the product except that it’s a money- making plan. As long as it is possible that such a plan could make money for someone under some circumstances, the authorities don’t object to it. It makes no difference if the story of the Guy Who Got Rich Quick is total fiction. He’s not asking you to pay anything for the story only the secret plan.
Very often the plan is a book or manual consisting of ways to sell by mail. It probably did make him rich. After all, selling things by mail is what he’s trying to do with his ad.

Most books sold this way do not tell you anything specific about the experiences of the advertiser. He tells you to pick some product, write an ad and take your money to the bank. It’s about as useful as an 8-page manual on how to be a heart surgeon. Never buy anything from a blind ad that doesn’t have a solid money-back guarantee.

The fact is, there are no real "get rich quick" plans. The mail order business takes time and money to launch. The Guy Who Got Rich Quick never tells you what he paid for his full page ad. A full page ad in a national publication can cost anywhere from $600 to $2,500 for a one time buy. He didn’t say that you must advertise consistently to be successful in mail order. He also forgot to mention the cost of paper, postage stamps, office equipment and time required to get your offer delivered.

Those of us who are in business for ourselves know that the only secret to making a profit (or riches) is perseverance, a lot of hard work, good management, good customer service, time and commitment.

My problems with the “browsers”

with one comment

First, this is not a "technical" review. In this post, I’ll just point out some issues I have with the browsers and what stops any of them from having a permanent spot as my default browser.

My machine is a HP dv2910us, Intel Centrino 2 Duo, 3gb RAM, 250gb HDD with 112gb free.

60px-Internet_Explorer_7_Logo Internet Explorer

The default browser that came with my operating system, has a couple of major annoyances.

The engine renders very slow compared to other browsers.

When I am saving a webpage, the save dialog is modal, I cant do anything until the page saves completely. In the event that a timeout occurs, the page saving hangs and sometimes, I am left at the mercy of IE.

A dialog to update Silverlight showed up recently and Microsoft decided that other tasks were not worth it until I clicked update.

80px-Firefox-logo_svg Firefox

Firefox is the browser that has the highest probability of becoming (and staying) my default. Except for the fact that it is CPU hungry. I am not bothered about it using memory (I seem to have quite enough of that), my CPU is very precious.

Once I had Firefox consistently using 30% of my CPU. For a web browser, that is downright ridiculous. Some people say is it because of the plugins. I beg to differ. Even with no web page open (just a blank tab), fox here was a guzzling 5% of my CPU.

64px-Apple_Safari Safari

Apple’s darling browser. Simply put, it is out of place compared to other browsers running on Windows. Just cant use it.

It’s a different culture here. Apple take not.

94px-Opera_logo Opera

This Norwegian software is a serious contender for the default spot. But no matter how hard I try to like it, I always seem to prefer IE. I have not had any experience with memory or CPU consuming, but then again, I have not had much experience using it.

64px-GoogleChromeLogo Chrome

Newest kid on the block. It came in with a minimalist interface (I LOVE MINIMALISM) and unbelievable rendering speeds. But it also came with its problems. Not to repeat myself, I have done some earlier reviews.

Generally, Flash is the "biggest" problem of all the browsers.

Beware of Fraud – Interswitch

with 3 comments

A mail is going around, sent by http://www.interdatabase.net claiming to be from Interswitch. Please note that is a faudulent site. DO NOT ENTER YOUR CARD DETAILS.

Online ATM Debit Card Security_1224188168030

I did a whois on the domain, and the registrant has gone to great lengths to hide his/her/their identity. As you can see from the whois information, it was registered on 15 October 2008. It screams FAKE all the way. Please be careful.

I did some investigating on the site, viewing the source, I found a link http://www.abbey.co.uk/CsAppsExp/Abbey/Internet/Abbey/html/demo_html_ebanking_0.htm Unless the fraudster is from the UK, I do not know the correlation.

When you submit the form, no matter what you input, it always sends you to an error page. Ofcourse, they must have stored your information.

The error page then takes you to another page, claiming to "update your information". Still fake.

--- Welcome to INTERSWITCH ---_1224190045403

^^ is the actual interswitch website.

Please pass this message to your friends.

US Elections 2008, where is the rest?

without comments

Because of my previous post, I decided to do some browsing, looking for information about the US 2008 Elections. I got to CNN, and saw their "Poll of Polls". If Obama has 50% and McCain has 42%, where is the rest?

Did I bother to find out more? No. I have no interest whatsoever in the elections.

Samuel Peters, abadie?

with one comment

Translated, my title is "Samuel Peters, how are things?". The typical answer, from Ibibio speaking people, is Nfana Ibaga (meaning, "no problem" or literally, "problem has finished"). But I doubt is SP will be giving that answer.

The guy lost the match. Sometimes, I am grateful that I do not watch sports. The heartbreak caused by watching him lose would have been too much for me to handle. I read about it in papers and on the Internet. I also got this lovely picture of him (from AOL Homepage). Link to the news article. Link to image gallery.

Ouch! That has got to hurt.

Infinity, where art thou?

without comments

Of recent, I have been asking a lot of questions, especially about characters in the Nigerian Entertainment industry. My next question…where are the people behind this video? Where are the members of Infinity of Olori Oko fame. Are they also one of those one hit wonders. Seriously, I hope not.

Below is the video that shot them to fame.
